Salt Lake Summer Corporate Games

~~~ Guest post by Windie Darrington ~~~
Tradition
In what has become a well-anticipated tradition for the Utah Dell EMC offices, we wrapped up our summer events with our 5th consecutive participation in the Salt Lake County Summer Corporate Games. The corporate games are a variety of sport and non-sport events that create an "Olympic" style competition among 70+ companies with an estimated 8,500 participants, and opportunities for everyone in the company to contribute to the team’s success as well as give back to our community.
The 2017 Summer Games began in March with team members submitting art designs for the coveted competitor shirt. Design specifications were easy: corporate games logo and our rally cry “GO BIG WIN BIG”. Wow! We have some talented designers in house. Our winning design was voted on by their peers.
Opening Ceremonies
The games begin in true Olympic fashion with opening ceremonies following a 5k wellness walk for all employees. The opening ceremonies are an opportunity to showcase our company to the competition. It is a carnival atmosphere full of fun for our team members and their families to enjoy. This year’s Corporate Games theme was “TV Show”. In true Dell EMC fashion we went big and won big with our “Dell EMC Turtle Lair” filled with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle videos games, a TMNT balloon artist, Donatello, Raph, Shredder and of course, PIZZA! Dell EMC was awarded "Best Hospitality" as well as voted “People’s Choice" . . . COWABUNGA DUDE!
Heart and Soul Award
The Heart and Soul Award was originally started as a “$200 minimum requirement” of donated food and blood to our local banks. Our Utah office received a very warm thank you for turning this into a real competition. After 4 consecutive years of earning the Heart and Soul award through thousands of dollars and pounds donated to the Utah Food Bank and with hundreds of lives saved through blood donations, we quickly became “the ones to beat." It is a honor to say that we drove the top 5 companies in the competition to raise over $50,000 dollars in food donated to the Utah Food Bank and hundreds of units of blood donated to the American Red Cross. Dell EMC came in a very close 2nd for this year's award. 1st place went to one of our fierce Corporate Games competitors, but one of our cherished Dell Technologies customers: L3 Communication Systems. In the end, it is with great pride that we all say the real winners are the Utah Food Bank and American Red Cross!
The Games
With a total of 37 competition events Dell EMC participated in the following 20:
  • Men’s Bowling
  • Go-Kart
  • Kickball
  • Women’s Bowling
  • Men’s Golf
  • Laser Tag
  • Coed Bowling
  • Coed Soccer
  • Men’s Softball
  • Mystery Room Escape
  • Coed Softball
  • Poker
  • Dodgeball
  • Trivia Mania
  • Scavenger Hunt
  • Coed Volleyball
  • Men’s Volleyball
  • “Mystery” Event
  • Executive Challenge
  • Wellness Walk
  • Finishline Festival
The summer game competition spans a three week period with events being held on weekday evenings and Saturdays. Among our competition events we are also able to participate in an executive challenge, volunteering, and the Heart and Soul Award. The executive challenge consisted of 6 assigned C-level, Director or Sr. Managers checking in at competition events. This was a piece of cake for our crew. Not only did we have an executive check in at all but 2 events, they were playing on the teams.
Dell EMC did not have a “Michael Phelps” record year in hardware, with only 6 earned medals in Golf, Mystery Room, Kickball, Trivia, Men’s Volleyball and Scavenger Hunt. Looking solely at competition scores we ranked 11th in standings.
However, that was before the final volunteer count was added. If there is one thing that Dell EMC exemplifies in their daily actions, we know how to Go Big and Win Big! Our team Members' continuous volunteer efforts at the games not only resulted in the Utah site being awarded the "Volunteer Company of the Summer Games," we claimed 3rd place in the Corporate Cup! Could it be that the Salt Lake County Corporate Games slogan, “Friendly Competition Boost Employee Morale,” is something we believe? I think our amazing team members answered that.
See you at the winter games!
The Mozy Decade
This week marks the 10-year anniversary of the Mozy acquisition. You can accomplish a lot in 10 years, and Mozy has! The list of accomplishments is long, but there's one at the top that stands out conspicuously . . . Mozy has remained a reliable source of data protection for millions of customers around the globe while other technologies and service providers have changed dramatically or vanished completely.
While my day-to-day responsibilities aren't filled with Mozy like they used to be, I still advise the Mozy team on a regular basis. Local to the Silicon Slopes, they are an integral part of Dell EMC Utah. Within the Dell Technologies family, Mozy is an integral part of our Data Protection product line. Together, we protect all of your data all of the time wherever it resides.
See my other posts about Mozy's 8-year anniversary and 9-year anniversary. Most importantly, please join me in congratulating and thanking the Mozy team!
